An innovative line of rugs that consistently maintains a comfortable body temperature for your horse throughout the entire rugging period.
Horse owners around the world often struggle with selecting the right rug weight to suit weather conditions and their horse’s actual needs. The situation is further complicated by the fact that many horses remain in the same rug until their caregiver visits the stable again. Standard rugs with fixed parameters cannot adapt to the horse’s needs in real-time, often resulting in the horse becoming either overheated or chilled – sometimes several times in one day. That’s why we created the Winderen Thermoactive rug, capable of active thermoregulation – absorbing, storing, and releasing heat precisely when your horse needs it.
The rug comes in two versions: Zoom – the winter version (equivalent to rugs with 100-350g filling) and the transitional version (equivalent to rugs with 50-200g filling).
Winderen Thermoactive is the first and only line of rugs in the world to feature patented technology from the German company Outlast®. This advanced solution uses phase change materials (PCMs) – substances that can repeatedly store and release heat as they change their state – to maintain optimal body temperature. Outlast® technology was originally developed for NASA, to create clothing for astronauts who have to cope with extreme temperature fluctuations in space.

PCMs change their state depending on the horse’s skin temperature. When the temperature is too high, they absorb heat, allowing the horse to stay comfortable without overheating. When the temperature drops, they release the heat to prevent chilling.
These phase change materials are permanently integrated into the Thermocules polymer coating, which retains its properties even after numerous washes.

Additionally, Winderen Thermoactive rugs have the ability to maintain the proper microclimate on the horse’s skin. This technology not only regulates temperature but also prevents moisture build-up on the skin. This means your horse, even when walking briskly in the horse walker, will not become sweaty. With Outlast® technology in Winderen Thermoactive rugs, you can ensure your horse is not too hot, not too cold – just right!

Choose a Matching Hood
If you’re looking for comprehensive protection against heat loss, you can also purchase a dedicated hood for the Winderen Thermoactive rug. For the Winderen Thermoactive Zoom 100-350 rug, we recommend the Thermoactive hood. If you opt for the lighter rug, the Zoom 50-200, you can choose either the Thermo Clear or Softshell Thermo Clear hood.

From autumn, through winter, to spring – throughout the entire rugging season – we conducted thorough tests on the thermoregulating capabilities of our rug. We split horses into two groups, both kept in identical stable and weather conditions, and with the same daily activity level.
The only difference? Group one was dressed in Winderen Thermoactive rugs, while group two wore high-quality rugs from another well-known brand.
We placed Orscana sensors under the rugs of all participating horses to measure temperature. The monitoring took place 24 hours a day, with real-time data collection. Orscana, developed by the French company Arioneo, is a device for monitoring the temperature of a horse under its rug.
The results exceeded our wildest expectations!

the red color indicates too high a temperature (overheating)
the blue color indicates too low a temperature (cooling)
The data on the graphs show a typical day during the winter season, and another during the spring season.

Over 7 months of testing (from October to April), horses wearing Winderen Thermoactive Zoom 100-350 rugs remained in constant thermal comfort within temperatures ranging from -15°C (5°F) to +17°C (63°F), regardless of their activity level.
Meanwhile, the horses wearing traditional rugs had to be changed into rugs of different weights, and even then, optimal temperature regulation wasn’t always achieved.

We use incredibly compression-resistant Climashield filling from an American manufacturer in our Winderen Thermoactive rugs.
Traditional rugs often use filling made from cut, short synthetic fibres. Climashield filling contains continuous fibres, resulting in superior durability and performance.
Climashield does not compress. It retains its loft and insulation even after being crushed, and dries quickly after contact with water. Most importantly, it maintains its valuable properties even after multiple washes, ensuring the rug’s long lifespan.

We understand how common rubs from rugs can be on horses. To prevent this, we have sewn soft, vegan fur into all the vulnerable areas – on the shoulders and withers – to significantly reduce friction. What’s more, the fur is placed deep enough to protect the entire sensitive wither area.

The winter version of the Winderen Thermoactive Zoom 100–350 horse rug features a military-grade, durable, and secure fastening. You can easily fasten and unfasten it with one hand, and the mechanism prevents the horse from accidentally opening the rug’s flaps and straps.

Overheating, along with underheating, is one of the most common causes of discomfort in our horses. Not only does it cause sweating, but in the long term, it can also lead to a weakened immune system. A properly chosen Winderen Thermoactive rug is a simple way to ensure your horse stays thermally comfortable without these unpleasant consequences.

We understand how challenging it can be to find storage space for all the rugs you need. The situation becomes even more complicated if you have more than one horse to rug. Winderen Thermoactive rugs act as a thermal buffer and can easily replace several rugs of different weights.
No more worrying about extra space!

One Winderen Thermoactive rug replaces several rugs of varying weights. This means you’re not only reducing the materials needed to produce them but also minimising waste. We’ve also ensured that this rug will last you for years without losing its properties – say goodbye to constantly replacing rugs each season!

All Winderen Thermoactive rugs come with a practical tail strap encased in a silicone cover, which can be easily detached in just a few moves. This strap makes it simple to keep the tail area clean on a daily basis. When it gets dirty, simply wash it under running water and wipe it dry.

All Thermoactive rugs, thanks to their high-quality filling, retain their properties even after multiple washes. This makes them a highly practical solution for maintaining cleanliness – they are machine washable at 30°C (86°F).
