About Myler bits

Myler bits were developed by the horsemen Bob and Dale Myler around a graded Level system. The idea is to match the bit to where a horse is in its training and how it responds, and to move through the levels as the horse progresses.

Every Myler mouthpiece carries an MB number, and the same number means the same mouthpiece whichever cheek it sits in. That makes it easy to keep a mouthpiece your horse likes while changing the cheek. Most of the Myler bits we stock have sweet iron mouthpieces with copper inlay.

The mouthpieces you will find most often here:

  • MB 04, the low port Comfort Snaffle, gives the tongue a little room under a shallow port.
  • MB 06 is a low port mullen barrel, with no joint in the middle.
  • MB 33 is a medium wide ported barrel with more room for the tongue. We also stock the MB 43 ported barrel in narrow and wide versions, and the MB 42 correctional ported barrel.
  • MB 36 is a forward tilted ported barrel.

We stock them on loose rings, eggbutts (with or without hooks for a curb strap) and hanging cheeks, and on Pelhams, Kimblewicks and Weymouths with matching bradoons. Myler combination bits act on the nose as well as the mouth. We carry the medium and short shank versions, together with the noseband kits and curb straps that go with them.

If you are weighing up a port against a jointed mouthpiece, our article on the mullen mouth bit covers how an unjointed mouthpiece behaves, and the Pelham guide explains the curb action.

Many of the metal Myler bits can go on our 30 day Bit Bank trial, so you can try a mouthpiece on your own horse before you buy.
