89-2643 – Myler Pelham Ported Barrel Wide

Pelham Cheek

Design: Using two reins, the Pelham is a combination between a Dee ring and straight shank. The Pelham has three rings on the shank: the top ring is for the headstall and curb chain, the center Dee ring for the first rein and the bottom ring is for the second rein.

Function: Operates as both a direct action and leverage bit using a curb strap or chain. With pressure on the first rein, it works as a direct action bit, exerting the same amount of pressure on the mouth as on the reins. With pressure on the second or bottom rein, it works as a leverage bit, tilting the mouthpiece forward and applying pressure to the parts of the mouth, curb and poll.

Usage: Used in English disciplines.

Options: Patented bushing system which allows the shank to turn independently of the mouthpiece, purchase and headstall.

The Low Ported Barrel Narrow (MB 43LP)

Design: Curved mouthpiece with upward and low-ported centre barrel

Function: Rolls downwards onto tongue and bars. No palate pressure. With the tongue pressure before tongue relief, the port encourages relaxing at the poll. Does not collapse on the bars nor pinch the tongue. Turns into a solid mouthpiece when asking for a stop. Each side turns independantly. offers tongue relief and release when horse relaxes at poll. Less tongue relief than MB 43.

Level: Two-Three

Usage/Solution for: Like the MB 43, the MB 43LP offers a “Comfort Zone” when the horse is relaxed at the poll. With independant side movement, the MB 43LP works well when lifting a shoulder, bending, collection and stopping. It is a good choice for spoiled horses and those needing encouragement to relax at the poll or lift a shoulder.
