GP – Globe Pelham
The Pelham bit is often used for horses that prove to strong in a snaffle, the Pelham is a very popular bit. It uses a variety of pressures, which all in all seem to work together to prove a very useful bit. The Globe Pelham is not a Pelham as normally known as this bit is only used with one rein, there is no snaffle ring on this bit although it has a curb chain, this bit may be suitable for Novice riders or for the young who need the curb action but couldnt handle to reins. As this bit is only used with on rein when the rein is used the bit puts pressure on the poll due to the hanging cheek and when the rein is used a little more the curb chain comes into play the greater the length of shank the greater the amount of leverage and curb action the bit also uses various pressures in the mouth depending on the mouthpiece. The curb chain should be fitted so there is a bit of give so not to tighten up straight away.
For jumping it may prove useful to use a elastic curb chain as some horses dont like jumping in a curb as when the horse jumps it needs to stretch and if the reins are not given in time it will cause the curb to tighten and maybe jolt in the curb groove, which the horse is obviously not going to like.
The Cambridge Mouthpiece
The Cambridge mouth is a very mild mouthpiece; it is an unvarying mouthpiece, which means the pressure on the mouth doesnt change very much, as it is a fixed mouthpiece. This mouthpiece is super alternative to the straight bar for horses with a larger tongue, horses that are likely to have larger tongues are for e.g., Irish Draft x or the Dutch Warmblood. The bit puts pressure on the tongue and lips (corner of the mouth), it does use slight pressure on the bars depending on the size of your horses tongue, more than that of a Mullen mouth. This bit is very useful for those horses that have a very soft mouth and dont like complicated mouthpieces, it may also be useful for horses that back off the contact and need that extra bit of confidence in the bit.
This mouthpiece may not be suitable if your horse leans on the bit or if they tend to take hold of the bit.
