A Modern Twist

The marriage of the full cheek and loose ring results in both amplified directional aids, and increased feel and response, as unlike traditional full cheeks that may cause the horse to block and prove wooden, subtle aids are not lost through the rein.

Popular with the young horse starting out as the full cheek will help with straightness and turning, whilst the loose ring action will promote balance and self-carriage.

Also, recommended for the novice rider as the full cheek will stabilise the mouthpiece and prevent it moving across the mouth, especially when changing rein. This means it’s highly beneficial for horses that are sensitive and may be prone to lip trauma.

Over sensitive horses often block the hand, and the addition of the loose ring allows the rider with subtle vibration to interrupt this habit, whilst the very gentle Turtle Top encourages the horse to refocus and relax, settling into a soft, sustainable contact.

Please be aware that although every effort has been made to blunt the tips of the full cheek, accidents can still happen- especially with horses that like to rub their head on young children and unsuspecting adults! Therefore, we recommend that caution be taken with horses in a Full Cheek when being handled from the ground and ridden.

The Turtle Top mouthpiece is recommended for tongue sensitivity, and is one of the few, very mild mouthpieces that enhances the feel and response through the rein. Highly recommended for those horses who are ‘wooden’ to the rein aids.

Encourages the horse to lengthen, and stretch into the contact, taking the bit forwards confidently.

Helps the horse to soften through the jaw, quietening the tense, busy mouth. Often beneficial for those horses with a tense neck or large tongue.

The Turtle Top mouthpiece creates a bridge, arching gently around the tongue, ensuring stability within the mouth, and reinforcing the rein aids for directional control. It forms a broad, smooth profile down onto the tongue, offering the comfort of a fat bit, whilst taking up very little room between the tongue and palate (roof of the mouth). Recent research has shown that there is not as much space in the mouth as previously thought.

Remains further back in the mouth, discouraging tongue evasions and negating the need to over tighten the cheek pieces to combat this. Not only does this mask the rein aids, but the increased pressure in the corner of the lips (commissure) is uncomfortable for the horse and is likely to cause rubs. This position in the mouth also benefits those horses with a short smile (short distance from the corner of the lips to the muzzle).

Available in sizes: S (118-128mm), M (128-138mm), L (138-148mm)

Turtle Top with Flex

Anatomy-inspired double jointed bit design with enhanced mouthpiece
stability, through optimised alignment of the mouthpiece surfaces to the
tongue and palate.

The Neue Schule Flex design concept delivers a guaranteed and well
controlled co-alignment of the surfaces of the mouthpiece with the
sensitive surfaces of the equine mouth. For most designs Flex delivers
parallel co-alignment of the Turtle Top dome with the equine palate.

In selected designs we allow Flex to deliver some firm but fair
additional pressure to the tongue and poll using a lever action-induced
rotation of the mouthpiece. The extra pressure obtainable is carefully
restricted with Flex limiting the range of additional rotation to around
10 degrees.

FlexZ

FlexZ is a development of our popular Tranz range (hence the “Z).
Gently curved cannons form a wide arch aligned over the tongue and held
in shape by Turtle Top. FlexZ is therefore more securely centred on the tongue and more resistant to being pulled through the

Get The Turtle Top Advantage

A Revolutionary Design;

The unique and innovative Turtle Top TM    bit has been designed to help quieten and focus the over-active and busy mouth.  The revolutionary Turtle Top  TM prevents the horse from lifting the side arms, or “cannons, of the bit through its inspired joint design that locks the upward flexion of the cannons.  The resulting stability of the bit in the mouth allows the rider to give clearer rein aids and provides the horse with fewer distractions.

The Turtle TopTM naturally sits further back in the mouth;

    • Negating the temptation to over-tighten the cheek pieces.
    • Improved bit positioning delivers greater clarity through the rein aids
    • Eliminates extra pressure in the corners of the mouth and poll.

The upper surface of the central link matches the anatomy of the Equine Upper Palate by being gently curved and widened;

    • The central link fits neatly under the palatine arch and restricts upward movement of the cannons
    • The central link cannot strike up into the upper palate.  This reduces the likelihood of the horse opening its mouth through discomfort,
    • Reduces the need for a flash noseband or other restraint.

 Anatomically Designed, The Turtle Top Link Sits Comfortably In The Palatine Arch

The Turtle TopTM Link holds the bit in an arc over the tongue helping to locate and maintain it in the most effective place.

    • Restricted upward cannon movement discourages mouth over-activity,
    • Helps to prevent sideways movement of the tongue,
    • Allows the mouthpiece to sit centrally arched over the tongue.
    • The Turtle Top with FlexZ Wraps Over The Tongue

The cannons have a unique flattened underside and horizontally positioned loops;

    • Provides a naturally large weight bearing surface,
    • Feel and responsiveness are enhanced,
    • Encourages horses to flex and round over the bit in to a more correct outline,
    • Allows comfortable, low tongue pressure,
    • Takes up less room in the horses mouth than a thicker bit.
    • Flattened Underside Of The Cannons Provides Greatly Increased Surface Area
